How do I edit/change my domain's mail servers (MX Record)?

Changing your MX Records will change where your incoming mail is routed! It is suggested not to alter MX Records unless you are sure of the changes as this can potentially cause mail delivery problems for days.

To edit the MX Record you must supply at least two mail server addresses. The addresses must be domains or subdomains and cannot be IP addresses. If you are only able to access your mail server via its IP address, please reference How do I enter an IP address for my domain's MX Record? instead.

Step 1:

Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel using your Customer ID OR domain name and your password

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page. If you have more than one package, select the package in question to reach its Administration page.

Step 5:

You will not be able to edit the MX record for your domain unless you are using the 1&1 name servers. If you are using a CNAME record or other DNS, you will not be able to make a change to the MX records within the 1&1 Control Panel and will need to make this change with your current DNS host.

Please note that mail server priority is usually set in multiples of 10 with the lowest number taking top priority (kind of like golf). You must enter at least two mail server addresses for the MX record.

arrow image Enter the first mail server address into the MX 1 / Prio text box followed by the mail server Priority in the second text box.
arrow image Enter the second mail server address into the MX 2 / Prio text box followed by the mail server Priority in the second text box.
arrow image Repeat for the third and fourth mail servers if needed although only two addresses are required.

Step 6:

A confirmation page is displayed informing you that the changes will be updated accordingly. As with all DNS changes, it may take 24-48 hours until the change is recognized by all servers/computers on the Internet.
