How do I use my own name server for a 1&1 domain?

By default, any domain registered with 1&1 will use the 1&1 name servers. It is possible to specify different name servers to use with the domain instead of the 1&1 name servers by making a change in the 1&1 Control Panel.

Altering DNS for a domain should only be performed by advanced users with a complete understanding of domain name services (DNS). An improper DNS configuration can cause a website to be inaccessible for days.

You should not edit DNS in the 1&1 Control Panel for external domains. External domains by definition are domains that are registered at another company and currently point to 1&1 name servers (DNS). If your domain is listed as an external domain in the 1&1 Control Panel, you will have to update which name servers should be used with the domain at the domain's registrar, not in the 1&1 Control Panel.

Step 1:

Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel using your Customer ID OR domain name and your password

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page. If you have more than one package, select the package in question to reach its Administration page.

Step 2:

Click the Domains link from the Domains panel.

Step 3:

Tick the box next to the domain to select it. Click the DNS button above the list of domains and select Show DNS Settings.

Step 4:

Click the Edit button next to Name Server Settings.

Step 5:

If you are currently using a CNAME with the domain, you will not be able to set which name servers should be used with the domain unless you select DNS from General settings.

Select My name server from the Name server drop-down box.

Step 6:

arrow image Enter the first name server address into the Primary name server text box.
arrow image Select My secondary name server from the Secondary name server drop-down box to add a second address.
arrow image Enter the second name server address into the 1st secondary name server text box.

You may add a third and forth name server address if necessary however only two are required.

arrow image Click the OK button to save your settings.

Step 7:

A confirmation page is displayed. It may take 24-48 hours until the new name servers set are recognized by all servers/computers on the Internet.
